I started glossing over, at some point reverting to college mode (where my eyes move down the page, I spend the time to read it, but ultimately end up "reading" nothing. How are the police involved in this?

When his story started to unravel, he said that he was "duped" by a fake recruiter. The police then got involved to investigate.
