Steelers 27 @ Cardinals 23

Jeremy
Well, another year of picks in the bag. Hopefully this is a good game, but I haven't been this uncited for a Super Bowl in a long time.
Matt
The Steelers are probably going to win, but the Cardinals have a shot at winning, and I want them to win, so I'm picking them.
Sarah
This could be a good game. Not jump out of your seats in unison good, but still tolerable. We should do baseball picks in April! Can't wait for April!!
Jon
What is there to say?
A lot. Let me bore you for a bit.
Did you know that last year was the first time since we started doing picks that I got the Super Bowl pick incorrect? It was ok though, since I wanted New York to win. I know you all care. Interestingly enough though, it means my streak of cheering for the eventual winner of the Super Bowls goes on. That's because almost every other time I cheered for the team I picked.

A little discussion of recent Super Bowls before I get to this game specifically: Have you realized how good the Super Bowls have been in recent years? I mean, going back to St. Louis vs. Tennessee, in my memory, we've only had one really bad game (Tampa Bay/Oakland) and one mostly bad game (Baltimore/Giants). Other than that, we've not only had good games (Indianapolis/Chicago, Pittsburgh/Seattle), but we've actually witnessed some of the Best Super Bowls of all time! What can top last year's? And both times the Rams have been in Super Bowls, they've have been amazing. As have all the other ones New England has been in. (Say what you want about them, they make for entertaining title games.)
This is interesting because basically every Super Bowl in the previous 10 or so years was awful. The only one that really sticks out was of course the first of the Buffalo SBs. Classic of course. Beyond that game though, it was mostly all blowouts and none of them were entertaining for the disinterested fan.

So what to make of this year's Super Bowl? It's a tough call. If I were to look at trends of recent years or search for comparisons, here's what I would think. This game looks like it could easily be a repeat of Buccaneers/Raiders. A defense that's really good just making a good offense not matter. Thinking back, number one rated defenses seem to do well in the Super Bowl. Ravens and Bears come to mind. Similarly, the Rams ran into a good Patriots defense and didn't seem like such a good offense.
Of course, Arizona feels like the hot team. Like Pittsburgh was a couple years ago. Or the Giants last year. Then again, Carolina seemed like the hot team a few years ago too.
Still, I can't seem to get over how good a pick for Arizona feels, and how plausible it seems, despite the fact that it's equally plausible they lose by 30.

I'm still picking the Cardinals. Sure, they got blown out and looked awful just weeks ago. So what? The Giants got absolutely disintegrated by Minnesota last year and then just went on to win a bunch of games in a row and we all know the rest. I saw the Cardinals/Vikings game this year too. Blowout for the Vikings. Coincidence? Yes. But there's something special about the way the Cardinals have been playing lately. And I started the year thinking the Steelers weren't that great of a team, and even though I've basically been proven wrong, I can't fully get rid of that sentiment. I feel like Pittsburgh has the offense to get about 10 points a game and everything else is a bonus. The Cardinals basically get 14 by accident with Warner and Fitzgerald. Roethlisberger's got about zero protection, so all the Cardinals have to do is get to him and limit their own turnovers. Or maybe just find some way to score a lot and not give up points. I'll leave the specifics to the players.

I almost forgot to mention. Have you noticed who the coach is for Arizona? Maybe this one will be like the Gruden Super Bowl. Just not in the way I had previously thought.

Go Cardinals!

My wife works for a catering company part time, and she worked an officially sanctioned NFL Super Bowl party last night. She said a bunch of players were there but she didn't recognize any of them.

There were a bunch of parties last night, and someone I worked with went to the "Leather and Lace" party with Carmen Electra and Jenny McCarthy.

The Goodyear blimp has been flying around all week, along with the lesser known Direct TV blimp. And I drive past the airport in which they are docked every day on my way to and from work, so even when they aren't flying, I get to see them fairly close-up.

The stores have been selling Super Bowl merchandise for a while now. The colors this year kind of suck. They are greenish and blue-ish, similiar to the Seattle Seahawks. "Believe in Now" (apparently the official slogan or theme of this year's Super Bowl), is everywhere to be seen.

Raymond James Stadium is on one of the routes I sometimes take to work, and I literally drive right past it. The Buccaneers' logos and whatnot are all replaced with giant banners or the Lombardi Trophy, NFL logos, Super Bowl logos, and such. The NFL Experience is across the street from the stadium. I was going to go but I decided not to. Also, the traffic lately has been pretty bad.

Al Roker did the weather from Ybor (pronounced eebor) City, an historic district in Tampa.

I'm pretty sure I saw Troy Vincent being chauffeured on the freeway on my way home from work. the car he was in didn't have tinted windows, and had a big NFLPA logo on the side. I really have no idea if it was Troy Vincent or not, but whatever, it was someone important.

It is said that the city of Tampa was founded by a pirate named José Gaspar or something like that, and each year there is a parade and gigantic festival. This has nothing to do with the topic of the Super Bowl, just a fun fact.

That's about all I've got.

Here's something I'd like to negative nut.
Cris Carter STILL not inducted into the HOF. Granted, before I complain too much, Randall McDaniel did deservedly get in. But how can Cris Carter not be put in right away?
I heard today that the reason he wasn't put in last year was likely because no WR ever has gotten in on the first time and they are waiting to put Rice in there on his first ballot. So that solved that mystery. But why not now?

Football's whole process is pretty bogus anyway. Not to mention, they've shown over and over again that it's better to be famous than good. Better to be part of one or two championship teams than put up ridiculous stats your entire career. In fact, they've almost shown a complete disdain for any numerical representation of someone's performance.
Cris Carter retired as statistically the best receiver EVER that isn't named Jerry Rice. And even if people had taken the time to watch 10% of the games he played in, they'd know it wasn't even the statistics that made him so good. He was just unbelievably talented and productive. He made his teams better. Did no one notice that Minnesota made the playoffs virtually every year while he was there? And he was basically the anchor of the offense. You know how many quarterbacks came through Minnesota in those years? 583. Look it up. He was consistently good year after year in a consistently changing situation. Look, guys like Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison are obviously good. You can't argue that. But you know what? They had Montana, Young, and Manning throwing to them for virtually their entire career.
Carter had some good passers, but they changed every year, and often in the middle of the year. Rich Gannon, Wade Wilson, Sean Salisbury, Jim McMahon, Warren Moon, Brad Johnson, Randall Cunningham, Jeff George, Daunte Culpepper, plus Spergeon Wynn and Todd Bouman. Those are the starters. That's 1991-2001.
Sure a few of those guys are pretty talented, but can you imagine changing quarterbacks that many times and still being as good as anyone in the game?
Put it this way. He led the entire NFL in TD receptions three different years. 1995, 1997, 1999. Each of those seasons, with just a year between each, had a different qb as the predominant starter in Minnesota. Warren Moon, Brad Johnson, Jeff George -- didn't matter. Cris Carter found a way to catch more tds than anyone each time. And he did it with as good a set of hands that have ever caught a football, and with ridiculous body control.

Yeah, he'll be in the Hall some day. But some day should have been last year, or certainly this year.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame should be embarrassed by the consistently poor job they do at electing players.

Jon, I don't think anyone really would say that the two Superbowls that Packers were in were really that bad. SB 32 came down to the last drive, and 31 was within 7 points in the third quarter. Just bringing this up.

Jon, I too am very upset about the hall of fame inductions. I cannot understand why Brett Favre has not been inducted yet. Screw the five year waiting period; a player as good as Favre deserves to be the first player ever voted into the HOF while still playing.

I agree. Were the refs throwing yellow flags or Terrible Towels? Seriously though, the NFL should be embarrased by the officiating. I just don't buy that the Cardinals committed that many more penatlies than the Steelers. The refs were calling every little thing against the Cardinals while basically letting the Steelers just play. Other than the Steelers committing a late hit out of bounds and a D-Lineman pistol-wipping an O-lineman after a play, the every call seemed to go against the Cardinals. Any play that seemed to be able to go either way went against the Cardinals. And then the worst crime of all, an obvious incomplete pass was called a fumble inside of 2 minutes, and they don't do a booth review. This was an unforgivable end in a year full of really questionable officiating.

Well, it should have been looked at. It probably was a fumble, but then again he never lost it until he let it go and there's a lot of crazy passing rules. He did a mini-pump fake which according to the tuck rules et al means that he is absolved of all fumbles for all eternity. A play of this magnitude in a situation of this magnitude is a gots-ta-challenge situation, if for no other reason than to avoid these conversations. Especailly when you factor in that refs have begun to lean on the replay system as a "we better let it play out because they can always challenge it this way" crutch. (As was evidenced on another Warner non-fumble where, apparently, the only people on the planet who didn't see that as an incomplete pass in live action were the handful of officials.)

The officiating did seem awfully one sided. The only thing the Steelers have in their defense is that arguably the biggest direct call-to-game-changer was the holding call for a safety, but on the replay it showed that they could have called holding on pretty much every non-Roethlisberger Steeler in the endzone, and 2 of them were painfully obvious. In one instance the Steeler basically suplexed the Cardinal.
