Here's a little vindication about a call that almost lead to the Packers losing last week. In that particular play, along with the fact that it shouldn't have been illegal contact on the Packers, the Bears should have been flagged for illegal formation for not having enough players on the line of scrimmage. I'm just glad that the Packers ended up winning, because it really would have been this call that everyone would have pointed to and been talking about all week.

It shouldn't have been called, but Collinsworth overreacted with all the "That should never be called anywhere" talk, considering that the whole point of that rule was to stop exactly that from happening too deep. It's the kind of thing that you should be pretty sure about before you call, but on the other hand that's a risk a team takes in that formation when pushing that rule to the limit as well.
In other words someone could make the argument that it really shouldn't be something that actually gets a flag until you're in clear violation, so like 6.5 yards or so, like a speeding ticket (normally), but you could just as easily argue that the limit is a hard limit and you approach it at your own peril, like a plane flying too low to the ground, so you should really lay off at 3.5-4 yards to be safe, thus a formation that calls for first contact at 5 yards is stupid to begin with.

Maybe, but he was within the rules, they should call penalties based on what the rules say. I generally think that it should less strictly enforced; the contact should actually have to be more than just a shove as the guy runs by, but that's just my opinion. I've never liked these rules that limit what the DBs can do; I know you're just supposed to "cover" the receivers, but football is a physical sport, as long as you don't hit them while the ball is in the air, I think there should be a little more allowance for being physical in coverage. Obviously that's not what this is about at all, but I just took this opportunity to state my opinion about this rule in general.

You make it sound like we picked every game differently (when in reality it's only 3 and you picked the Urlacherless and Cutlerful Bears) and that I'm some sort of evil empire because I did awesome for one week.

I agree, both in that it wasn't against the rules and certainly not against the spirit of the rule, (I don't have a perfect video player in my head, it's possible contact was made at 5 yards, 2 inches.) and I would tend to agree with the "lets not be so strict" thought, except for the fact that I really think they need to drop the ambiguity. I don't want one ref to allow 7 and another call 5.5, not that this isn't the case already. I'm fine with it being a "only a shove" since being jammed too deep was the whole intention of the rule.Jeremy Wrote - Today @ 09:42:28 AM

My only point was that, while "you" did nothing wrong, technically, you're still playing with fire a bit. Pedestrians have the right-away, but it would be ill-advised of you to make a point of walking out in front of cars, and if/when you eventually get hit, being right, technically, won't be much solace.

Except for this: in your analogy, the penalty comes from another entity much like yourself. In other words, the car in this case is just the receiver. The Cops would be the referee, so that analogy doesn't quite work, although your whole point is simply that when you are pushing the line, you should expect an occasional case against you, which is definitely a valid point.

Dear Vikings O-Line-
Favre is an old man. Please try a little bit harder in protecting him.

I agree. way too many hits on the guy, even when he gets a throw off.

They lost on a last second field goal and pretty much outplayed the Giants all night.

Plus, you've gotta protect your Favre. Just because he's never missed a start doesn't mean he is incapable of getting hurt. I knew the Vikings didn't deserve him.

This is the type of game the Vikings always lose. Don't be shocked.Matt
The Vikings should go with a 3-man backfield of Peterson, Harvin, and Taylor.Sarah
If the Vikings lose, I will laugh hardily. Is that even a word? I will admit that my anger towards Favre subsided throughout last week's game.Jon
Adrian Peterson rushes for 300 yards and Calvin Johnson gets 200 yards and 2 TDs. Thus ends the first quarter of the most awesomest football game ever played.
