Vikings 38 @ Packers 26

Sarah
So this is it. It'll be interesting to see how Favre is "welcomed" back into Lambeau. Knowing how dumb the fans are that go to Lambeau (I'm sure a few should be excluded) they'll probably cheer him or something horrible like that. The mayor has been asking for ideas on how to welcome him back. One idea was to retire #4 for a quarterback that played in the '80's and only played in a few games. That'd be hilarious. The Packers NEED to win this game, they have no alternative. This is for more than just the division, this is for all the fans who believed in a certain QB that decided to kick his faithful followers in the face. It sux that that doesn't mean anything to players.
Matt
While it seems like this game should feel "bigger" that the first one, it doesn't.
Jon
Remember back to the first couple weeks where people looked at the Favre experiment and gave it the old, "well, yeah they're winning, but he's not exactly leading them to the victories" analysis? Those comments were lame then for a handful of reasons, and they're even lamer now. In my opinion, Favre was brought in to be the missing piece, which he seemed to be early on (early on being a whole 6 weeks ago). But a funny thing seems to have happened now that the offense has been together for a training camp-length period of time. To me, Favre has continued to supply Minnesota with the missing offensive piece, but he's also taken it far beyond that. He's got the reigns of the offense now, and he's doing a really good job. Sidney Rice's talents are getting utilized better than ever and I feel like the Vikings are as much a passing team now as a running team. As much an offensive team as a defensive one even. Part of that is because our defense seems a little hit-and-miss at the moment, but still.
Look, I'm not making Super Bowl plans yet or anything. I'm not even that confident they'll beat Green Bay this week. I just think that the BFE (Brett Favre Experiment) has been a great success, to date, and I'm excited to see what happens from here.
On another note, the coaching staff concerns me.

Falcons 27 @ Saints 35

Sarah
I'm interested in watching the Lions/Rams game. Like I saw the match up and was instantly intrigued. Woot!
Matt
This could be a good game. I'll take the Saints at home.
Jon
New Orleans is definitively the "it" team this year, right? I mean, at least in the NFC? Usually that means a loss is imminent, but maybe they'll win anyway.

I take a significant amount of offense to Sarah referring to fans who will cheer Favre as being "dumb". This is how I feel, and I don't think there's anything dumb about it. Sure I want to stick it Favre a little bit, but only sort of a "for old time's sake" kind of way. This whole overlyemotional outpouring is getting old. Anyway, time will heal all wounds, and those that can't welcome him back eventually didn't deserve him to begin with (oh I went there).

In other news, the Packers are actually favored in this game. That seems pretty crazy.

I would hope that most Packer fans are educated enough to know that Favre is not the devil and he doesn't deserve all of the blame for the way things ended in Green Bay. Ok, so he is now playing for your hated rival, but things are ok in Green Bay, you got a pretty good franchise QB there in Rodgers. Like the article says this a chance for the Packer fans to show their class and respect for the greatest player in their franchise history. I know its different but KG got a standing o when he came back to Minnesota for the first time with Boston.

Possibly, but the sentiments should still be the same. It's like when Brett wanted Randy Moss after his stint in Oakland. It would have indeed been painful to watch one of my favorite players on the Packers, and maybe I would have been conflicted about continuing to root for him, or be a well-wisher, but getting mad at Randy about it would just have been a bizarre, narcissistic, response. The Vikings decided they were done with Randy, and Randy wasn't done with football, so he would have played for whomever wanted him.

Since that rival QB meant something to me for most of my sports-watching life, I'll cheer for him initially. And I don't know that it's really all that accurate to say he "cut his ties." He plays for a different team now, but he still will always be a Packer.

and btw scott, he wont always be a packer, and if your going to expect that sarah get over this emotional bullcrap about how favre betrayed the packers then you need to get over this he will always be a packer because the fact is... HE DECIDED to retire, HE DECIDED to move to the vikings, out of any other team, HE DECIDED to do this to Green Bay, knowing full well what some of the fans would think. I think its fair to say that He is no longer a packer. end of story

Actually, to be fair, I think he, just like a number of other people, were caught off guard at how willing people were to turn on him and how personal they were going to take it.

Favre downplays the importance of return to Lambeau.

From the article:
That Favre is downplaying his return to Lambeau so thoroughly can only mean one thing: It means everything to him.

AND
"In my opinion, if you're a true fan, you're a true fan," Favre said. "Maybe this year. . . . Packer fans, as you know, are like no other. If you're a true Packer fan, you want the Packers to win. If you're a Brett Favre fan, then this week obviously you don't want me to win, but for the most part, 'Hey, hope this guy does well but hope the Packers go all the way.'

I actually think Favre has a pretty good handle on it.

Just got here for the week. I was thinking earlier what the response of the Packers fans should be.

Personally, I think booing a player is almost always lame, even if he's the best player on your least favorite team. All the more so when the player was basically the collective man-crush of the entire state for a decade and a half. But I'm cool with the fans giving him an otherwise icy reception. At least as it relates to the actual game. He's not the Packers quarterback anymore and he is the Vikings quarterback. He was happy to beat the Packers and they should be happy to try and beat him. All the rest of the stuff seems over the top though.

I have plenty more thoughts on the fan-athlete relationship, but maybe I'll save it all for another time.

Mike McCarthy needs to be held accountable for the stupid penalties. The Packers are a young team without a lot of veteran leaders, and in a case like that the coach needs to be more of a motivational leader as well as his other roles. Having an after-the-play personal foul after you just stopped a high powered offense on third down is flat out unacceptable; and a play like that where a player gets overemotional and headbutts someone is a matter of discipline. Tighten up the ship, McCarthy. The 4 point swing there could have changed the whole complexion of the game later on, especially because at the time, your defense goes from being pumped up to demoralized.

I agree that was a huge game changing penalty. It actually evened out later when the packers commited another penalty causing the Vikings to go for it instead of kick a field goal and came away with nothing instead of 3. But lets face it the Vikings were clearly the better team yesterday as they were in the first game. The Packers o-line is just awful. The only bright spot in the game for the Packers was Rodgers in the second half, although he still seems to hold onto the ball too long. When he gets out of the pocket he can be be pretty dangerous.

I think in the first half especially Rodgers was looking down field too often. If the Packers had some screens plays in their playbook they could have called some to help slow the pass rush, but apparently they don't so Rodgers should have just thrown some check down passes instead. Except Finley was out, Lee is more a mid to deep route guy, Grant doesn't really catch many passes and he's the only RB on the roster (Ahman Green's corpse doesn't count), Jordy is the only "possesion" receiver and he's out, so that leaves a converted LB as the only check down option. Of course he managed to score twice. Maybe there's something to that...they could try using their disgruntled d-line players on the o-line. Can't be any worse! Tampa Bay is 0-7 anyway, maybe both lines could learn something from putting themselves in the other guy's shoes. Don't be surprised if McCarthy screams out "LINE CHANGE!" at some point next week.
