The source they cite to as how they picked the top 9 (a curious methodological decision in and of itself) is only a couple months old, comes to a different conclusion, and even that has odd stats in it.
I question the methodology/phrasing of a poll that can find such massive swings so quickly in who people report as their "favorite" team in any real sense, but at best all this shows is a massive percentage of Americans are fair weather bandwagon dipshits. If I had to guess I'd say someone is oversimplifying the actual findings.
Edit: I mean, I don't care about the NBA at all, and I barely follow the Timberwolves, but if asked "what is your fav NBA team," my answer would be "The Timberwolves." I might follow them more or less depending on their success, maybe even going so far as to pile on the bandwagon if they took off, but I don't know who these adults are whose "favorite" team changes from week to week.
