Packers.com answers fan questions.
I love it when fans try to really pretend to understand everything about football, and I love it when writers are blunt about the fan really not having an clue. take this example:
**********************
Robert from Harvel, IL
Vic, I believe the problem with our pass-defense is that Capers is not having our secondary play much “Cover One†with blitz pressures underneath. Last year, our pass-defense flourished when we played that coverage while blitzing. The popular excuse in defense of our pass-defense is that opposing teams have to pass more since our offense gets a big lead to start the game; however, the weakness was shown right away in that long pass to Michael Jenkins at the start of the game at Minnesota.
Robert, when a defense’s biggest problem is that it’s giving up too many big plays, you don’t wanna play a lot of “Cover One†because that’s a high-risk scheme with a single-high safety that invites the big play. Before you can start playing those kinds of attack defenses, you have to prove you're sound in the deep third of the field; the Packers haven’t done that. The pass to Michael Jenkins, by the way, was off a rollout to the left. It was designed to avoid pressure. The blitz is the cherry on top of a defense. It’s not a base principle, it’s the exotic thing you can do when you’ve mastered the base principles.
********************
To paraphrase:
Vic, the Packers can't stop the big pass, why don't they play tight Cover 1.
Dear reader: because playing Cover 1 would be really really stupid.
I tend to know a little bit more than the average fan I think. I try to read up on things. But I also try to let the experts tell me these kinds of things and I try not to speculate on things I know I have very little knowlegde of.

Jeremy - Robots don't say 'ye'
10/28/2011 @ 12:45:14 PM
Except that person didn't necessarily write "how come we don't Cover one and blitz on every down cause we wuz awesomes when we done did that last year", he pointed out a coverage that he thinks worked well when the Packers DID blitz, that they (presumably) aren't doing when they do blitz this season. The guy almost completely ignored the question (they're already opting out of their "base", why are they NOT doing the thing they had success with when they did the same thing last year) and instead decided to go all sports writer on him.
Jeremy messed with this 4 times, last at 10/28/2011 1:00:36 pm

Scott - If you aren't enough without it, you'll never be enough with it.
10/28/2011 @ 04:03:16 PM
Not that this the point, but perhaps you're right to a certain degree. Vic should have said that injuries to key players (some that aren't keeping players out of games, but still limiting them nonetheless) have caused the coaches to tell williams to avoid press coverage until his shoulder is fully healed, burnett is essentially playing one handed, and nick collins's replacement is unfortunately not an exact clone of nick collins. What I saw was the reader saying "they need to play more cover 1" and the writer saying "they aren't good enough to do that this year, at least not yet."

Sarah - How do you use these things?
10/30/2011 @ 03:12:14 PM
Turds and Trophies for everyone right now, except the one person who's Cincinnati Seattle pick didn't take!

Did anyone see the Saints-Rams game today? I picked the Rams and even I was shocked that they pulled that one off, not a Rams fan I just hate the Saints. Sure glad I was the only one that picked the upset. Hope to see the Eagles punch the Cowboys in the mouth tonight!!!!!!

Bye weeks suck.Jeremy
The Vikings just might be in playoff contention if Ponder was in there from day one. Though, as it stands I'm assuming this is just another example of getting our hopes up before they're crushed. Plus, then even if he turns out to actually be good, there's a 90% chance he'll suffer some career altering injury. Odd Fact: The last time the Vikings were involved in a battle of rookie QB's was 51 years ago.Jon
Vikings have got to be one of the best 1-6 teams ever, right? Maybe?
