Whether or not Christian Ponder is "the problem" or Josh Freeman is "the Answer", only 3 Quarterbacks that qualify have a lower Passer Rating so far this season than Christian Ponder; one of those 3 is Josh Freeman. #justsaying

Can a field goal kicker win comeback player of the year?

One headline this week should read: "Bears catch a break with Cutler out against Packers."

I would give you 5 nuts for this if their backup was someone better than McCown. Dude is a turnover machine.
ATT INT FUM
1,133 44 41 McCown
3,180 107 61 Cutler
2,914 50 39 Rodgers
Edit: No, kickers can't win comeback poy

This guy had Mason Crosby at number 8 on his list of potential Comeback POY candidates. I'm assuming by "can't", you most likely mean "probably won't". I'm guessing there's no ban on kickers winning. Just that's it's quite unlikely.

So I'm listening to players react to Brandon Meriweather's comments that he has to end peoples' careers because he can no longer jack guys in the head. I understand that taking away the ability to "hit 'em high" is forcing players to change a little bit of the way they play. But I think there is a huge difference--as is evident by the fact that most defensive backs in the leauge aren't getting suspended for their play--between adjusting the way you play a bit to not aim for a guy's head and "well, if I can't lead with my head with the intent of jacking a receiver in the earhole, then I have no choice but to hit him in the other most vulnerable part of his body." It's like they are saying that the only two places you are capable of tackling a guy are in the head or at the knees. What ever happened to the body? And on that note, tackling the way Meriweather tackles isn't all the effective anyway. The plays for which he has been fined have been examples of a guy leaping with his head first with no attempt to wrap up the offensive player with the arms. I would venture to guess that most fines, particular from defensive backs, are the result of a player trying to "hit" a receiver rather than tackle a receiver. You so often see a DB attempt to lay out a big hit on a receiver where the only guy who actually goes to the ground is the DB because the receiver bounced off the half-assed (or half-fast?) attempt at a tackle. I'm not going to lie, I don't have much sympathy for players like Meriweather if that's there idea of good tackling. I haven't played the game, but I've seen enough examples of good tackling the know that it is certainly possible to be really good without being a headhunter.

Ok, I might be pulling for Christian Ponder after this.
Other updates: Mason Crosby won NFC special teams player of the month for October (on the road to comeback POY?). And Eddie Lacy wins NFL Offensive Rookies of the Month.

Why the crap would anyone have a midyear top ten ranking of Comeback Player of the Year candidates?

Don't be ridiculous, Jon. It was a pre-season top ranking of Comeback Player of the Year candidates.

If Mason Crosby is up for an award for not being terrible this year, than they might as well hand out participation ribbons.

Isn't that often what the comeback poy is? Johnny Jolly, however, is an interesting story. And he's having an impact on his team. I think extenuating circumstances should trump "this guy just sucked last year and is good this year" for an award like this.

Sarah - 4621 Posts

Comeback awards should only be for people coming back from injuries. Why should you get kudos for doing your job right for once? Johnny Jolly I could see as a comeback POY nominee. He came back from prison/addiction.

Thus is the curse of rooting for the Vikings. You have to watch them fail a number of times and in ways that wouldn't be believable in a movie, while often the game remains in reach virtually the entire time.

Scott - If you aren't enough without it, you'll never be enough with it.
11/03/2013 @ 05:33:23 PM
You mean, like fumbling the kickoff out of bounds at the 5 yard line, then fumbling the next play for an opponent touchdown, then missing an extra point that was te difference in needing a fg or a touchdown in the final seconds? The Cowboys seemed to be giving that game to the Vikings. The Vikings must not have wanted it very much.

How the Bengals play here might show whether they are legit or not. Or it might not show that.Sarah
Some dude on some show picked the Bengals as the best 2 loss team in the league. I guess I'll pick them.
