Let's talk about Patrick Mahomes. Actually, we'll start with the Metrodome. At the Metrodome, at least in its baseball form, there was a thing ballplayers did where they tried to scale the long, straight staircase from the dugout to the baseball clubhouse level in the fewest number of steps (or, I'm guessing, leaps). When I say the staircase was long, I mean it was long enough to have multiple landing areas every dozen steps or so.
I don't know the exact number, but my recollection was it was an average number of steps for a flight of stairs. I don't remember the number of flights, I want to say it was about seven, but it doesn't really matter. On a tour of the Metrodome, the guide told of this challenge these players would do. He said there was a tie for the fewest number of steps to the top. One player who had the record was Cal Ripken Jr. Makes sense, right? I mean, the Ironman, the hall of famer, the prototype for the modern shortstop. A verifiable great athlete among great athletes. The other player who made it to the top in the fewest number of steps? Pat Mahomes, former pitcher for the Minnesota Twins and father of the current Chiefs QB. All this to say, while I am surprised the younger Mahomes is lighting up the league so soon, I guess it also makes sense. The guy gets half his genetic makeup from a guy with Cal Ripken-level athletic ability.
